The value of literature is the same as the value of visual art or music. It is an art and an expression of the thoughts and feelings of the artist. If you see a picture or sculpture you like and connect with, the artist has been successful. If you see a film and enjoy it or are inspired to think or explore, the artists that created it are successful.
